Paywall and plan limits for bootstrapped membership apps

Founders without investors now build their first product as a membership: plan tiers, credits and a free plan that should turn paid. The price goes in before the product, because customers are their only source of money.

Taking the payment is the easy part. Stripe handles it, and builders like Lovable connect it for you. The trouble starts after launch: the paywall stops people before they reach what is worth paying for, plan limits are checked by hand, and people who abandon the checkout never hear from the app again. Mobile apps have RevenueCat for this. A web app built with AI gets a checkout and stops there.

That is a product to build: a free-to-paid layer added as easily as analytics. It finds where members get value and moves the paywall behind it, enforces plan limits without code, and wins back abandoned checkouts. Start with founders on Lovable or Bolt, who already have Stripe connected.

Growhold, where founders validate a product on real buyer demand before they build, sees bootstrapped founders ask for memberships about twice as often as other startups. Read the full article on Growhold.
