Accountability is the one job agents cannot take

Under every AI chat box sits the most honest sentence in software: "AI can make mistakes. Please double-check responses." Read it as a contract. The company that built the model takes no responsibility for anything the model produces. Whoever uses the output takes all of it.

The contract covers more every month. Agents now write the code, draw the screens, design the system, and make decisions inside whatever frame they are given. That work got fast and cheap. The accountability for it stayed with a person.

Owning a piece of work means carrying the responsibility for it. Carrying the responsibility means making the decisions about it. An agent can produce a decision. It cannot own one, and nobody can hold it to one. So the person who runs the agents answers for the agents' decisions and for their own, which means for all of the work.

That is where the cost of software went. Agentic development moved it from writing code to deciding whether we are building the right things and whether we are building them right. Those decisions, and the responsibility for them, are the part of the work that stays human.

Under every AI chat box sits one honest sentence: AI can make mistakes, please double-check. Read it as a contract.

What AI now does

AI now writes the code, draws the screens, designs the system and makes decisions. That work got fast and cheap, but the responsibility stayed with a person.

  • Writes the code
  • Draws the screens
  • Designs the system
  • Makes decisions
  • The responsibility stayed with you

AI can decide. Only you can own it.

An AI can make a decision, but it can't own one, and nobody can hold it to one. So whoever runs the AI answers for all of the work.

What stays human

So the cost of building software has moved. It's no longer in writing the code.

It's in deciding two things: are we building the right thing, and are we building it right? Those decisions stay human.

  • Are we building the right thing?
  • Are we building it right?
  • Those decisions are yours

The takeaway

Let AI do the work. Keep the decisions, and own them. That's your job now.
